Description
20 and 22 Market Place are late 18th century buildings with a roughcast facade, plain eaves, and a tiled roof. They stand three stories tall and feature six sash windows with glazing bars. The entrance includes a doorcase with a moulded wood hood supported by slender fluted pillars, a divided door, and a rectangular fanlight with moulded wooden consoles on either side, accessed by steps. A 19th century shop front and an arched entrance to Lovatt's Yard are located on the north side. The rear of the building dates from the late 17th to early 18th century and is made of red brick, with a three-story center flanked by two-story outer wings. The building has been raised from earlier lower gables to higher coped gables, featuring two-light windows with Gothic glazing bars and flanking side lights, as well as keyblocks. An angular two-story bay with early to mid-18th century windows has been added to the center wing. The interior contains several contemporary features of interest. All the listed buildings in Market Place form a group, and the rear faces of Nos 21 and 22 are grouped with all the listed buildings in Lovatt's Yard.
