Description
The Whitworth Institute is a late 19th-century stone building located on Dale Road North in Darley Dale. It consists of two large blocks, with the left block featuring two lofty storeys and five transomed mullioned windows, three of which break above the eaves and are gabled. The ground floor has an arcade of five arches with transomed mullioned windows and a moulded doorway behind. The building displays moulded bands, coped end gables with kneelers and ball-head finials, tall clustered stacks, and a pinnacled lantern, all covered with green Westmorland slates.
On the left side, there is a single-storey convex wing that connects to the Whitworth Hotel, featuring an eight-light transomed mullioned window, pilasters, and an open balustrade above the cornice. The Assembly Hall on the right side has three three-light mullioned windows with gables above the parapet and a moulded doorway to the left, which is surmounted by a three-light mullioned window and an enriched panel. This section also has coped and voluted end gables with side pilasters and ball-head finials, along with a raised lantern-light overall. An advanced single-storey bay to the left includes two six-light transomed mullioned windows, pilasters, an open balustrade above the cornice, and a set-back gable with ball-head finials and a recessed enriched panel. The design of the Whitworth Institute is tied to that of the Whitworth Hotel.
