Description
Masson Mills, located on Derby Road in Cromford, is a significant building dating from around 1783 and later. This Grade II* listed structure features a painted brick centre block that was originally constructed for Sir Richard Arkwright. The centre block stands four storeys high and has three windows, with the outer windows designed in a Venetian style and the central window being semi-circular, all framed in stone surrounds. The main entrance is also framed in stone, and the building has rusticated quoins at the front angles. At the top, there is a coped parapet adorned with two oval plaques and a central circular plaque. Flanking the centre block are later additions, five-storeyed wings made of painted brick, each featuring eight windows with channelled lintels. The left-hand block has quoins at its side, while the building has plain eaves and is topped with slate roofing.
