Description
Waldley Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1632 with early 18th-century additions and some 20th-century alterations. The structure features close studded and diagonal ribbed timber framing set on a stone base, with painted or rendered brick. It has plain tile roofs, including a brief external gable stack to the west and a ridge stack to the east. The farmhouse consists of three bays, including an advanced single bay crosswing, and is two storeys high, with garrets in the crosswing.
On the north elevation, the 18th-century section to the west has a 20th-century window, a 19th-century central doorcase with a 20th-century door, and a lean-to shed to the east. The eastern gabled bay showcases impressive exposed timber framing. The ground floor features close studding with a large 19th-century casement window to the east, an inserted central brick pier with a 19th-century window to the west, and a 20th-century window in an original 17th-century opening. Four large brackets support the jettied floor above, which has diagonal ribbing and a carved central panel dated 1632. Above, there are two 2-light casement windows in adjacent central panels, and to the west, a blocked small 2-light mullioned stair window. More diagonal ribbing and a small casement window are located at the top.
The south elevation has been considerably altered, with the gable wall of the 1632 bay rebuilt in early 20th-century brick. The ground floor features two 20th-century bow windows on either side of a 20th-century bay window. Above, there are three 20th-century 3-light casement windows, and to the east, a 2-light 20th-century casement window.
Inside, the farmhouse retains an oak newel staircase from the 1632 section, along with moulded beams and exposed close studded partitions. The western part of the house has later box frame partitions. Most internal doors are early 18th-century raised and fielded oak panelled doors. The north-east room in the 1632 wing has been refashioned in the early 18th century, featuring a squint fireplace and panelling up to dado height.
