Description
Blackwall Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, with later alterations and additions, and was refurbished in the late 20th century. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone with ashlar dressings, featuring brick gable stacks and a plain blue tile roof.
The front elevation faces south and consists of two storeys and attics, with three bays rising from a shallow chamfered plinth. There is a lower single bay range added at the west end. The principal doorway is located to the left and has a moulded quoined surround with a massive lintel that bears the inscription "W.G" (William Glossop). The plain plank door is topped by a drip moulding. To the right of the doorway, there are two and three-light window openings, which were formerly mullioned but now contain small-paned horizontal sliding sashes set within 17th-century surrounds, also with drip moulds above. The first floor has three openings of a similar design.
The rear elevation features a catslide roof over a service lean-to, with a three-light chamfered mullioned window on the west wall. There are two-light windows at the first floor and attic levels on both gables, with 17th-century surrounds and 20th-century small-paned windows.
Inside, the ground floor rooms have exposed spine beams and joists, while the hearths were remodeled during the late 20th-century refurbishment. The main staircase has an unusual design, featuring polygonal finials on the newel posts and splat balusters at the landing level, with a section of the handrail that has carved scroll patterning.
Historically, an inventory from 1604 lists the possessions of the first William Glossop, although it does not mention specific rooms in the house he occupied. Two wills from descendants named William Glossop are dated 1647 and 1675.
