Description

The Central Methodist Church, built in 1870 on the site of an earlier chapel, features a Renaissance-style facade. The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, with a plinth, sill, and impost bands, as well as a cornice frieze and a modillion cornice. An advanced giant portico is topped with a pediment that has a modillion cornice and a palmette finial. The portico is supported by two Ionic columns and square outer pilasters. The church has two storeys and three round-arched windows with moulded archivolts, separated by pilasters. The ground floor includes three windows with segmental arches and moulded architraves, along with three advanced six-panelled doors beneath the portico, each set under broken pediments and featuring moulded architraves. A hanging lamp is positioned above each door on curved and scrolled brackets, and there is a six-step approach to the entrance. On either side of the portico, there is one window on each floor; the upper windows are round-arched with archivolts, while the ground floor windows are flat-arched with moulded architraves beneath the cornice. The sides of the building are made of red brick, featuring a modillion eaves cornice, with white brick eaves and bands at the ground and first-floor sills. The rusticated plinth has seven windows.

Inside, there is a panelled semi-circular balcony supported by timber and iron pillars with composite capitals. The pews have tall round-arched end boards, and there is a cast iron semi-circular rail leading to the dais, which features a richly carved pulpit and an organ positioned above. The gallery contains plain high-backed pews, and the ceiling is coffered. The building includes staircases with two turned balusters on each step and several six-panelled doors.
