Description
The Stone Memorial is a memorial arch made of ashlar sandstone. It features a flat arched structure supported by a pair of Tuscan columns, which hold up a deep ashlar lintel with a moulded cornice. The front of the lintel has an inscription that reads: "MEMORIAL. JOSEPH BOALER DIED JANUARY 15th 1835 AGED 86 YEARS ALSO MARTHA HIS WIFE DIED JULY 17th 1832 AGED 85 YEARS. THEIR REMAINS LIE DEPOSITED UNDER A NEAT TOMB AT CARBURTON IN THE COUNTY OF NOTTINGHAM." This inscription is surrounded by a recessed relief sculpture of a draped urn. The reverse side of the arch is inscribed with "C.B. S.B UNITED 1794."
Historically, this arch is one of two memorials dedicated to the Boaler family, located in the garden of Sycamore House in Barlborough. The Boaler family resided here from the late 18th century until the house was sold in 1907. The memorial forms a group with another monument located to the southeast.
