Description
49 High Street is a house that dates from the 17th century and 18th century, with extensive remodelling in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared limestone with sandstone dressings and quoins, topped with a machine tile roof. The house features stone gable stacks and stone coped gables, along with a moulded eaves cornice.
The north elevation is broad and has three bays. The central doorway is framed by a bead moulded ashlar surround and has a moulded hoodmould above it. The entrance is a panelled door, flanked by glazing bar sash windows set under wedge lintels. There are three similar windows located above the door on the second storey.
Inside, the house boasts an 18th-century open string staircase, which has two balusters per tread that are alternately turned and twisted, along with a fluted newel and a ramped handrail.
