Description

The Old Hall is a small country house, dating to the early 17th century. It has been divided into three separate dwellings. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings, and has a stone slate roof. A ridge stack rises from the roof, and the gables are stone-coped with moulded kneelers. The house is two storeys tall with attics, arranged in an L-shaped plan. The main south elevation has five bays, with the three-bay section facing east. The ground floor features a four-light and two three-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows. Two 18th-century doorways are positioned between the windows, each with a moulded architrave and a bracketed segmental pediment, sheltering panelled doors. The first floor has three three-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows, and three further two-light recessed and chamfered mullion windows within gabled dormers above. The north-facing return elevation has two bays with large 20th-century windows on both the ground and first floors, and two gabled dormers above each containing a two-light recessed and chamfered mullion window. Inside number 2, a notable early 17th-century open-well staircase is present, featuring a closed string, heavy turned balusters, a heavily moulded handrail, and square newel posts with moulded finials and pendants.
