Description
Creswell Junior School is a school built in 1912 by architect G.H. Widdows. It is constructed of red brick and features plain tile roofs, with eight brick ridge stacks. The building has a single-storey, V-shaped plan that radiates from an octagonal hall topped with a pyramid roof and a small lantern.
At the ground floor, there is a lean-to arcaded passage with a row of gables above, and the windows are segment-headed. The wings of the building consist of twelve bays that end in gabled pavilions. Each pavilion has a tripartite arrangement featuring a large three-light central window with timber mullions and transoms, flanked by single-light transomed windows. The central window includes a round-arched tympanum adorned with herringbone brickwork. The bays on the left are arranged in groups of three. Each central window in these bays has three lights with two transoms and extends into a dormer with a hipped roof, while the flanking windows are two-light with one transom.
The interior of the V shape mirrors the design of the pavilions and includes continuous covered arcades. There are flat-roofed dormers present as well. Within the outer V, there is an additional range of buildings that are not of special interest. Widdows was a prominent architect known for his expertise in planning and designing schools.
