Description

Prestonfield Primary School, built in 1929 by Bernard Widdows, is a Queen Anne style school featuring a courtyard plan. The building is constructed of red brick with artificial stone dressings. It has a base course and windows set in recessed bays with stone cills, flanked by giant order pilasters and stone entablatures on the principal blocks. The doorways have stone architraves, and there is a stone string course and coping on the single-storey, flat-roofed blocks, along with an eaves course and cornice on the principal blocks.

The south entrance elevation showcases an advanced, central hall flanked by two-storey pavilions and single-storey blocks. The central block has five bays with large windows, while the pavilions feature tripartite windows on both storeys. The single-storey blocks have four bays with deeply recessed doorways beside the pavilions and single windows in the remaining bays.

On the north, east, and west elevations, there is a full-length, recent lean-to extension that widens the classrooms, featuring red and yellow painted pine boarding on the walls and a glass roof.

The central courtyard is enclosed and surrounded by a glazed corridor leading to the classrooms. It includes box dormers on the north, east, and west sides, and a central paved area with a bronze fountain titled "Mother and Child" by Thomas Whalen.

The school has small-paned, timber pivot windows and a red tiled piended roof that sweeps at the eaves.
