Description

Alton Manor and the attached stable range to the northeast is a small country house built between 1846 and 1847 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The building is constructed from ashlar gritstone, rising from a shallow plinth, and features coped gables, moulded kneelers, tall ashlar ridge stacks with octagonal shafts, and a concrete tiled roof, which was originally stone slated. The house has an irregular 'L' plan and is designed in the Elizabethan style, comprising two storeys and attics.

The southeast elevation has a gabled southwest end and includes a porch at the angle. It features a four-centred arched head to a moulded doorway, with decorated spandrels and a panelled door. Above the doorway is a stepped hoodmould and a coat of arms above the archway. There is a pointed oriel window above the doorway, and an octagonal tower with a pierced parapet above that. The windows are tall and have mullions and transoms.

On the southwest (garden) elevation, there is an advanced gable at the northwest end, a canted two-storey bay with a crenellated parapet, and grotesque spouts. A continuous stringcourse runs along this elevation, and there is a single gabled dormer above a mullioned and transomed window. The southeast end features an advanced bay.

The adjoining stable range to the northeast is also two storeys high and has a gabled entrance bay leading to the yard. This entrance features a moulded four-centred archway at the northeast corner, along with an ogee cupola that has lead covering and blind semi-circular headed lights.
