Description
The lodge to Alton Manor, built around 1846-1847 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, is a notable example of 19th-century architecture. Constructed from ashlar gritstone, it features quoins, coped gables with moulded kneelers, and a stone slated roof. The building has a cruciform plan, with the east elevation serving as the front. A central gabled projection on the east side includes a stone canted bay window on the ground floor and a gabled porch in the angle. The lodge is two storeys high and has casement windows, some of which are adorned with stone mullions and dripmoulds. A central stone stack with three diagonally set shafts adds to its character. Adjacent to the lodge are square gate piers topped with ball finials and ornate wrought iron gates.
