Description
Alton Mill is an outbuilding that was formerly a water-powered corn mill, dating back to 1695. It is constructed of coursed rubble gritstone, featuring coped gables and a tiled roof. The south elevation displays an irregular pattern of openings, including four ground floor openings, with the central doorway having a stepped chamfer lintel. Above, there is a first-floor overloft doorway in the center. The doors are plain and planked. The south gable includes two w-light chamfered mullioned windows, although the ground floor opening has had its mullion removed. An inscribed stone on the south elevation reads 'WILLIAM MASKEREY AD 1695. MWI JOHN SHIPMAN AD 1695', while another stone with illegible initials bears the date of 1761. The roof timbers have been replaced with modern materials, and the original machinery is no longer present. The mill is located by the River Ecclesbourne.
