Description
The Ferns is a house said to have been built in 1756. It is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings and features a Welsh slate roof that is hidden behind a coped parapet. The building has two brick ridge stacks, stone quoins, and stone sill bands on the first and second floors. A stone dentil eaves cornice and a chamfered stone plinth add to its architectural detail.
The house is three storeys high with a broad, symmetrical three-bay east elevation. The central bay is advanced and features quoins and a dentilled pediment. A Venetian door with a moulded stone surround and a stepped keyblock is located at the centre, flanked by raised and fielded panelled doors with narrow sidelights and a traceried fanlight. On each side of the entrance, there are glazing bar sashes under channelled stone lintels with stepped keyblocks. To the left, there is a doorway with a rusticated surround, a basket arch, and a raised and fielded panelled door.
On the first floor, there is a central glazing bar sash with a moulded architrave and stepped keyblock, flanked by two glazing bar sashes under channelled stone lintels with stepped keyblocks. Above, there are three smaller windows of a similar style.
Inside, the house features a dogleg open string staircase with a ramped handrail and stick balusters, along with a segmental arch across the entrance hall before the staircase. A tall staircase window and a chimneypiece with a carved surround are notable interior details, with another similar chimneypiece found in an upstairs room.
