Description
Hopping Hill is a row of early industrial housing built by Strutts between 1792 and 1797. The cottages are made of coursed stone and are terraced, stepping up the hillside. They feature slate roofs and brick chimneys. Nos 1 to 6 are two storeys tall and have small gabled attic dormers, while the rest are three storeys. Each cottage has one window; the ground floors have sash windows, while the upper floors mainly feature casements, including a unique nine-paned iron window designed and forged by Strutt on the top floor, where four panes form a casement. The first-floor door and window have voussoirs. Some modern glazing has been added, but it generally fits within the original openings. The cottages are enclosed by low coped street boundary walls, with steps leading to the front doors.
