Description

Numbers 1 to 14 West Terrace and 15 to 23 East Terrace, located on Hopping Hill Terrace in Milford, were built between 1800 and 1819 by Strutts for their workers. This block of back-to-back terraced housing is situated on a steep hillside at right angles to Shaw Lane. The buildings are constructed of coursed stone with slate roofs and brick chimneys. Ingeniously, the cellars of every other house on each side are dug into the hillside. Each pair of houses occupies a space of only 20 feet by 21 feet.

East Terrace consists of three storeys, while West Terrace has two storeys. Each house features one window, with some remaining iron casements and sashes, although much of the glazing has been modernized, generally in the same window spaces. A buttress at the north-west end adjoins No 14. The houses are approached by stone-walled footpaths along each side from Shaw Lane and by steps from Derby Road. There are also stone garden walls, and the terraced gardens of West Terrace have stone retaining walls.
