Description

The Old Beeches is a house dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick and rubblestone with stone dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof featuring stone coped gables and both plain and moulded kneelers. The building has brick ridge and gable stacks and a moulded stone eaves cornice. It has an L-plan layout, with a three-storey south range and a two-storey north range.

The symmetrical three-bay south elevation features a central doorway with a gauged brick lintel and a stone keyblock, leading to a 19th-century half-glazed door. An early 19th-century wooden porch, supported by four chamfered wooden posts and adorned with a fretwork frieze and an ogee roof, is located above the entrance. To the right of the doorway is a blocked entrance with a gauged brick lintel and keyblock. Flanking the doorway are glazing bar sash windows with painted brick lintels and keyblocks. Above these are three similar windows, with three smaller windows above again, all situated under the eaves cornice. The rear elevation is made of rubblestone and features a doorway with a stone lintel that has a crudely cut oval light.

Inside, the entrance hall showcases a segmental arch and built-in cupboards with dentil cornices. There is an open string dogleg staircase with stick balusters and a wreathed and ramped handrail, similar to those found at Old Rectory Farmhouse and Church Farmhouse. The first landing has two round-arched alcoves. One ground floor room includes an Adamesque chimneypiece, while the rear part of the house is older, featuring beams and an inglenook fireplace.
