Description

The Tower is a tall coursed stone structure located at Sunny Hill in Milford. It was built in the 19th century, specifically around the time the North Midland Railway opened the route from Derby to Belper in 1840, which was surveyed by George Stephenson. The tower has a square plan and stands four storeys high, with one opening on each floor. It is currently roofless and is situated over the Milford Tunnel. Historian Nixon suggests that the tower may have been used as a siting tower or theodolite during the surveying of the railway line, and notes that its construction would have provided work for many men during a period of low employment.
