Description
The Milford Tunnel North Portal is a tunnel entrance built around 1838 to 1840 on the North Midland Railway by George and Robert Stephenson, along with their Assistant Engineer Frederick Swanwick.
Constructed from Derbyshire gritstone, the portal features an ashlar design surrounded by rubble-work walling. It is located in a cutting and has a true horseshoe arch made up of seven ashlar rings. The first ring is concave and has a flat return to the outer edge. The remaining rings are semi-circular, starting from outwardly-angled plinths with simple impost mouldings. The middle five rings step out along the imposts in the following sequence: convex, convex, concave, convex, and flat. The outermost ring is concave, also with a flat return to the outside edge. Surrounding the portal is a rubble stone retaining wall.
