Description

Duke's Buildings, numbers 2 to 8, are a terrace of three-storey houses built in the late 18th century and early 19th century, likely constructed by the Strutt family. Numbers 3 to 8 appear on a survey from 1792. The houses are made of coursed stone, with modern pantiles on the roof and brick stacks along the ridge. Generally, each house has one window, but number 2, dating from the early 19th century, features three windows and is back to back with number 65 Hopping Hill. The windows are sashes with late 19th-century glazing and stone lintels, although some have modern glazing. There are coped stone garden walls along the street boundary. The name may reference the Duke of Devonshire, who owned land in the area, as indicated on a plan from 1797.
