Description

Cowley Cottage is a house dated 1692 that incorporates elements of an earlier ecclesiastical building, along with later additions and alterations. It is constructed of massive ashlar gritstone and coursed squared gritstone, featuring quoins, plain gables, and gable end stone stacks, one of which has a moulded cap. The roof is plain tiled.

The building consists of two contiguous ranges; the southern range is taller and has three bays, while the northern range has two bays. The east elevation of the south range displays an irregular pattern of openings, including a flat arched three-light window with chamfered mullions and trefoil heads, and above it, a two-light chamfer mullioned window with deeply moulded reveals. To the north, there is a chamfered quoined surround to a doorway with a heavy lintel inscribed "AR 1692" and a 20th-century half-glazed door, along with a small fixed light above featuring a pointed arched head.

The lower north range includes a window and a blocked doorway on the ground floor, as well as an altered 18th-century window within a stone surround. The rear elevation has an interrupted continuous dripmould at the first floor level.
