Description
The building is a barn, which was once used as a stable and is now utilized as workshops for Uppingham School, along with a wall. It dates from the 17th century. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble with a squared stone front on the north side, topped with a Collyweston stone slate roof and coped gables.
The north front features a lateral stack, four ventilation loops, and a later doorway. The south front includes, from east to west, a two-light ovolo-moulded stone mullioned window, a blocked doorway, a later cambered-headed brick cart opening with a 20th-century door, a lower cart entrance with a 20th-century door beneath a massive timber lintel, a 20th-century door in an earlier opening, and a three-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window with leaded panes and a cornice above.
On the west end, there is a three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned and transomed window with leaded panes, two ventilation loops, and an owl-hole. The wall flanking the barn is made of coursed rubble, with the eastern side faced with squared stone, featuring coping and ball finials. There is a gateway to the west of the barn and a sundial on the south face of the wall to the east of the barn.
