Description

No. 8 High Street West is a house dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century. It features a squared stone front, with rubble stone on the other sides, and a roof made of Collyweston stone slate. The building has coped gables and stone end stacks with brick shafts. It consists of a main block and a cross-wing, both two storeys tall with attics.

The main block has a cornice and an off-centre panelled door set within a late 18th century round-headed architrave that includes a keystone. To the left, there are 8/8 sash windows on both the ground and first floors, while to the right, there is a tall 6/6 window. The cross-wing features a 4-light chamfered stone mullioned window in the basement, two 6/6 sashes on the ground floor, another 6/6 sash above, and a 2-light ovolo-moulded stone mullioned window in the gable.

At the rear, there is a two-storeyed gabled porch with a round-headed entrance arch flanked by Doric columns that support an entablature. This entablature continues over another round-headed arch to the left, which is now a window but was likely originally open. Above the entrance, there is a four-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window. The rear face of the cross-wing has a 2-light ovolo-moulded window with a cornice, a 4-light ovolo-moulded window with a transom, another similar window without a transom, and finally a single-light chamfered opening. The upper part of the gable is rendered, and a lower gabled wing, also rendered, projects from the rear to the right of the porch.
