Description
Nos 55 and 57 on Main Street are two houses with a rear wing that was formerly a reading room and fire station. They were remodeled in the early 19th century, incorporating some fragments from the 17th century. The buildings are constructed from coursed ironstone rubble and have a Welsh slate roof with flanking brick chimneys. The layout is L-shaped, with two storeys and four bays on the front. The windows are three-light wooden casements featuring horizontal glazing bars and wooden lintels, with five on the first floor; the ground floor on the left has been altered in the 20th century. There is a 20th-century half-glazed door between the left bays and a central 20th-century door set in a moulded stone surround with a four-centred arch. There are also blocked doorways between the right bays and adjacent to a window in the second bay. The later rear wing includes a wide doorway with a moulded stone surround, a four-centred arch, and a large renewed keyblock. Inside, the third bay features a stop-chamfered fireplace lintel, an ogee moulded spine beam with a central fillet, and cavetto moulded side beams.
