Description

24 Main Street is a Grade II listed building that includes two houses, which are thought to have been part of a former market house. The structure dates from the 15th to early 16th century, with extensions made in the 18th and 19th centuries, and some rebuilding and alterations in the early 20th century. The end facing the Green is made of coursed ironstone rubble, while the front facing Main Street has been rebuilt in brick and colourwashed, having originally been timber framed. The roof is covered with Collyweston slate and features a coped gable on the left side of No 1, along with two brick chimneys. The building is L-shaped and has two storeys.

The front facing the Green has one 18th to 19th century bay with three-light wooden casements that have horizontal glazing bars, and a 20th-century door to the left. The gable end of the older wing has been re-fronted and includes similar three and two-light casements on the right. The right return of the gable end has the upper part of the wall slightly corbelled out. The front facing Main Street was rebuilt in the early 20th century and features four bays of paired barred wooden casements on the first floor, with irregular ground floor windows and a door to the right.

Inside, the older wing retains fragments of timber framing in the original rear wall, a central truss with heavy curved braces that nearly form an arch with a cambered tie-beam, other tie-beams, and an original roof that includes chamfered collars, clasped principals, and some curved wind-braces. There are no traces of smoke blackening.
