Description

Stoneleigh is a house that dates from the 17th to 18th century, featuring remodelling of a medieval building, with alterations and extensions made in the 20th century. The structure is built of coursed rubble ironstone and limestone, with large limestone quoins on the lower walls. It has a Collyweston slate roof and flanking white brick chimneys. The house is two storeys tall and has two and a half bays. The 20th-century wooden casement windows are three-light on the ground floor and two-light above, with wooden lintels. The central entrance features a top-lit flush-panelled door and a 20th-century half-timbered gabled porch.

On the right gable, there are two blocked openings with chamfered four-centred arches made of limestone, along with a small rectangular opening with a limestone surround. The left gable has a pantiled projection, rebuilt around 1980, which may have been a former ice-house. There is also a 20th-century wing at the rear. Inside, there is a large fireplace with a moulded stone jamb and a small window to the right, along with traces of two former fireplaces on the left end—one featuring a massive cambered lintel and the other with a cambered and chamfered beam. The house has heavy chamfered spine beams. It faces a lane that leads to former medieval fishponds and may have been part of the complex of buildings associated with the former bishop's palace.
