Description
This is an 18th-century formal terrace, retaining wall, and staircase located on the south front of a house. The terrace features a long, low parapet with a balustrade alternating with moulded stone panels, all set above a high stone retaining wall that contains shallow arched recesses. Two symmetrical flights of stone steps, each with stone balustrades and a sweeping stone rail, rise to the central projecting section of the terrace. It is possibly the sole survivor of three tiered terraces originally built around 1710 by Daniel Finch, although it may have been reconstructed by Repton, who reportedly removed the lower terrace around 1796. The terrace reflects a tradition established by Buckingham’s house, and from a distance, it provides a significant visual base and foundation for the building.
