Description
The entrance gates and gate piers at Burley on the Hill date back to 1700 and are notable for their ironwork by Joshia Lord. Originally, these gates were flanked by lodges and walling, which have since been removed by Repton. The main gate piers are rusticated and square in shape, featuring fluted pilasters and a plain cornice topped with griffins. The outer piers are also square, adorned with moulded panels and cornices capped by urns.
The central pair of gates consists of two panels each; the lower panels are richly decorated with wrought foliage, while the upper panels feature spearhead shafts and foliate borders. Above the gates, a curved wrought iron over-arch rises to display a monogram and coronet, which is surrounded by scrolled foliage. The outer gates also have two panels, each with a concave head that curves upwards to meet the main piers.
