Description
This is a group of 10 chest tombs located in the churchyard adjacent to the west end of Caldecott Church, dating from around 1820 to 1860. Eight of the tombs commemorate members of the Stokes family, while two others, positioned slightly apart, commemorate members of the Ward family. The tombs are made of limestone ashlar and feature moulded bases and cornice lids, with recessed corners that include rectangular balusters. The sides of the tombs have oval inscription panels, most of which contain carved fan motifs in the spandrels. The inscriptions on the south sides are mostly illegible. Overall, the tombs form an impressive group.
