Description
Barnsdale is a large country house built in 1890 for Earl Fitzwilliam as a hunting lodge, designed by E. J. May. The building features a picturesque 'Old English' asymmetry and is constructed from coursed and squared rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a red tiled roof. The entrance front has five irregular bays, including a two-storey balustraded porch with strapwork decoration and a banded round arched opening, along with massive timber doors. There are various mullion and transom windows, including a leaded bay, and a double gabled projection to the right with gabled dormers at the center. The house has very tall brick chimney shafts. The southwest front also has five bays arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern. To the left, there is a gable featuring a two-storey canted bay window, while the central range has three gabled dormers with finials and mullion and transom windows. One window expresses the staircase within, featuring a tall window with a single ogeelight within the mullions. The right-hand bay projects as a massive stack with small inglenook lights, three brick chimney shafts, and a two-storey bay window on the inner face. Inside, the house has a series of elaborately decorated rooms, including an entrance hall with a wood screen arcade leading to the stairwell and an ornately wrought staircase. The panelled dining room and drawing room feature an ornate columned fireplace recess, among other details.
