Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a parish church dating to 1843, designed by William Surplice, with later additions by Jackson & Heazell (chancel, 1866-77) and AE Heazell & Son (north aisle, 1922). All architects were based in Nottingham. The church is constructed of ashlar, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs, and is in the Gothic Revival style.

The plan includes a chancel, vestry, nave, south porch, north aisle, and lady chapel. The exterior features a plinth, buttresses, coped parapets and gables. Pointed arched windows have hood moulds. The chancel, in the Decorated style, has two bays and a corbel table; its east end features angle buttresses with crocketed pinnacles and a resited window from 1843 with five lights. A two-light window is situated on the south side, divided by a buttress and pinnacle. The vestry, to the north, has a flat roof and a three-light, flat-headed window to the east and a similar window and door to the north. The nave, with five bays, originally had buttresses with pinnacles, now removed; at the west end, a cross-gabled wooden bell turret stands. The south side displays four graduated triple lancet windows, and a gabled porch with a pointed arched door and hood mould to the west. The west end has two flat-headed windows, each with two lights, and a pointed arched door to the left. The lady chapel, in the Perpendicular style, has a three-light window to the east and a two-light window to the north. The north aisle, also with five bays, features four similar two-light windows as well as a gabled porch with a chamfered doorway. The west end presents a graduated window with three lights.

Inside, the church is rendered and contains a roll-moulded chancel arch with shafts and a small pointed arched opening to the left. The chancel has a principal rafter roof with large wooden angel corbels. A stained glass window, created in 1948 by Pope & Parr of Nottingham, commemorates Ichabod Wright, who died in 1871. Two stained glass windows from the late 19th century are positioned on the south side. The north side exhibits an organ arch and a blank recess. The nave features a thin hammer beam roof with arch braces. The north arcade has smaller end bays, octagonal piers, and double chamfered arches. A stained glass window on the south east, dated 1862, also commemorates Ichabod Wright. The west end contains two small windows. The north aisle and lady chapel are barrel-vaulted with wood. The lady chapel has a segmental pointed arch and a stained glass east window from around 1944. A stained glass window from 1922 is on the north side, along with a piscina. Another stained glass window from the mid-19th century accompanies memorial windows to the Wright family on the north side of the north aisle. The fittings include an octagonal font with an arcaded base (1846), 19th-century chairs, and other 20th-century items. Memorial tablets from the mid-19th century are also present.
