Description

The bandstand, built in 1937, is located on Victoria Embankment in Nottingham, to the south of the Memorial Gardens. Designed by the Nottingham Corporation Architects Department, it is an example of the Moderne style.

The bandstand is constructed from brick and concrete, with timber detailing and rendered areas. It has a symmetrical, square plan with a curved principal elevation. The design incorporates a raised performance area at the front, and a lower section behind, containing a pair of rooms accessible via a rear door. A curved, cantilevered canopy projects over the performance area, sheltered by a pair of sliding timber doors that enclose the bandstand when not in use. Flat roofs cap the structure. Moulded timber pilasters flank the bandstand, and there are two windows on each side. The exterior brickwork is painted green. In front of the bandstand is a semi-circular, tiered seating area.

The interior of the auditorium features half-height oak panelling on the rear wall, while the stage area has hardwood timber flooring.

The Memorial Gardens, which were added to the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens at Grade II in 2001, were opened in 1927. The bandstand is part of a group of listed structures and spaces, including the Municipal War Memorial, a statue of Queen Victoria, an ornamental pond, a terrace wall and a pedestrian bridge across the River Trent. The bandstand is now little used and remains locked.

The bandstand is designated at Grade II for its architectural significance as a good example of the Moderne style, its intactness, and for its group value within the historic setting of the Memorial Gardens and surrounding structures.
