Description
Musters Road Methodist Church, dating to 1899, was designed by R. C. Sutton and built in a late 14th-century style. The church is constructed from tooled and plain ashlar with lead and slate gabled roofs. It features a chamfered plinth, a moulded string course and eaves band, crenellated parapets, shouldered coped gables, scrolled gutter brackets, and single side wall and gable stacks.
The building comprises a south-west tower, a nave and chancel under a continuous roof, north and south aisles, and north and south transepts. The two-stage south-west tower has battered corner buttresses with two setoffs and a deep modillioned eaves. It is topped by a square leaded tent roof with a finial and wind vane. The tower includes a clock within a moulded panel. The nave west end has a 5-light Decorated lancet window, and the clerestory contains multiple triple lancets. The chancel east end mirrors the nave’s lancet design.
A north-west porch features a door with a segmental head and a leaded overlight. The north gable is buttressed and includes a double lancet. The aisles contain four triple lancets on each side. The north transept has casements to the north and west, while the east side has a doorway and casements. The south transept has a triple lancet and slit lights on its south side. A south-east porch provides access. An entrance lobby is notable for its segmental vault. Ashlar stairs with a coped balustrade lead to the north porch. Both porches have doors with segmental heads.
Inside, nave arcades consist of four bays with round piers and moulded segmental arches. A continuous sill band and a panelled hammer beam roof run through the nave and chancel. A C20 screen, gallery, and stained-glass window (1959, by Abbott & Co. Ltd.) are located at the nave west end. Plastered groin vaults cover the aisles. The chancel features a dwarf screen wall, panelled dado and a stained-glass window from 1902. A segmental-headed opening on the south side houses an organ. A practice room contains a wooden Classical fireplace and overmantel.
The church's fittings include a traceried octagonal wooden pulpit with a buttressed ashlar base, a traceried panelled communion table, a C20 lectern, panelled and moulded stalls and desks, and a bronze memorial tablet dating from 1935.
