Description

Number 1 and the attached boundary wall are located on South Road in Nottingham. This house, built in the late 1850s by TC Hine for the 5th Duke of Newcastle, features red brick with yellow brick and ashlar dressings, topped with hipped slate roofs and two brick ridge stacks. The building has a plinth, a panelled first floor, and eaves bands, along with a coved eaves cornice. Most of the windows are original plain and glazing bar sashes. The structure is two to three storeys tall and has a square plan with three bays on each side.

The main entrance faces South Road and includes a central square tower porch that rises three storeys, featuring a moulded ashlar doorway and fanlight. Above this is a round-arched plain sash window, with round-arched corner balconies and shafts, capped by a pyramidal roof. To the right of the porch is an additional doorway with a flat head and two windows. The right side of the building, facing Cavendish Crescent South, has a central lean-to projection with a porch and a single-storey projection that now serves as a garage. Above this area are three glazing bar sashes.

The attached boundary wall is made of rock-faced Bulwell stone, with red and blue brick bands and ashlar panelling, topped with stepped blue brick coping. Directly opposite the main entrance is a gateway featuring square piers, a wooden gate, and a wrought-iron overthrow. The piers have plinths and cornice caps. The wall runs along South Road for approximately 70 meters and about 7 meters along Cavendish Crescent South, with a rounded corner, and includes a small gateway with square brick piers.
