Description
This pair of gate piers, located 15 meters northeast of the Castle Museum, was built between 1674 and 1679, likely designed by Samuel Marsh for the first Duke of Newcastle. Constructed from ashlar, the square, rusticated piers stand approximately 3 meters high and feature cornices and urn finials. Together with the nearby staircase, they mark the main formal entrance and are part of the original architectural scheme of the Ducal palace.
