Description

The Imperial Building, located on Victoria Street in Nottingham, was constructed in 1868 by Williams of London. Originally serving as a post office and telegraph office, it has since been converted into offices. The building was raised in 1883 and underwent alterations in the late 20th century.

It is built of ashlar and features an Italianate style. The design includes a plinth, rusticated angle pilasters, and pilasters at the ground floor level. The building stands three storeys tall, plus a basement, and has a total of nine windows across the front and seven windows on the sides, arranged in a regular pattern.

The windows are plain sashes, with those on the ground floor having been renewed. A central window with a pediment is flanked by four windows on each side, all topped with cornices and adorned with sham balustrades. Above this, there is a central window with a cornice and flanking windows that have eared surrounds. Below, a central doorway has been blocked, with plain windows on either side that feature basement lights.

To the right, there is a set-back entrance bay with a door and overlight, with a single window on each floor above it. On the left, a rounded corner bay contains three windows on each floor, featuring the same ornamental style as the front. The left return facing Carlton Street has similar window arrangements, although the second floor only has four windows.
