Description

The Pit and Pendulum is a public house located at 17 Victoria Street in Nottingham. Originally built in 1870 by Robert Evans for Lewis & Grundy, ironmongers, it was extended in 1873 by Evans & Jolley. The building features red brick with ashlar dressings and is designed in the Italianate style.

Architectural details include quoins, a modillion cornice, a mosaic frieze, and a balustrade with pedestals. The windows are primarily segment-arched plain sashes with moulded ashlar surrounds and ornamented keystones. The structure has four storeys and five window ranges, divided into three on one side and two on the other by a rusticated strip.

The ground floor has five openings separated by ashlar pilasters, which include coloured tile panels. There is a full-width cornice, and above the inner pilasters, a square relief panel with a segmental pediment. The central bays feature 20th-century windows and shopfronts, while the outer bays have 20th-century doors. Each floor above has five windows, with the fourth-floor windows being smaller. Notably, on the first floor, between the third and fourth bays, there is a bracket clock with automaton figures of blacksmiths. The building is included for its group value.
