Description

The churchyard walls and gateways to the Church of St Mary the Virgin date from the late 18th century and 19th century, with restorations made in the late 20th century. The walls are constructed of ashlar and brick. To the north-east, there is a formal gateway in the Gothick style from the late 18th century, featuring a round-arched opening beneath a shaped gable, flanked by clustered columns and a wrought-iron gate. Each side of the gateway has screen walls with ramped coping and rusticated square end piers. The north and west sides of the churchyard are bordered by brick walls topped with shaped and flat stone copings. A similar wall is located to the south-west, adjoining other buildings. At the south-east corner, there are a pair of square brick gate piers from the mid-19th century, topped with pyramidal caps, and a pair of wrought-iron gates. Adjacent to these, to the north, are a pair of square ashlar gate piers with stepped caps and a wrought-iron gate leading to Clifton Hall. To the south, there is a rendered brick wall with stepped moulded brick coping.
