Description
Nottingham Castle Outer Bailey wall and towers were built between 1252 and 1255 for Henry III, with Edward's Tower added around 1300 for Edward I. The structure was slighted in 1651 and restored in 1908. It is made of coursed squared stone and ashlar, featuring flat coping and standing approximately 8 meters high. The wall extends south-east from the castle gatehouse for about 50 meters to Edward's Tower, which is a blank round tower with a plinth. The wall continues south-east in a slight curve to a round corner tower, then turns sharply south-west for another 50 meters along the scarp of Castle Rock. This structure is an important survival of the medieval castle.
