Description

Mount Vernon Terrace comprises a group of four houses built around 1840, with a tower added approximately 1865 by TC Hine of Nottingham. The buildings are constructed of red brick with stucco detailing, and have slate and concrete tile roofs, featuring three ridge stacks and a single gable stack. The design incorporates a plinth, quoins, and an elaborate dentillated eaves cornice. Most of the windows are original plain sashes, with moulded surrounds. The terrace is arranged over three storeys, with an eight-window range. Each house features a balustraded bay window with three sashes, accompanied to the right by a round-arched doorway supported by pilasters and featuring a cornice. Number 19, the leftmost house, has a similar bay window extending to two storeys. The first-floor sashes have alternating triangular and segmental pediments, while those above are smaller. Number 19 also features a square tower at the rear, which includes continuous fenestration, a wooden gallery on three sides, a pyramidal roof, and a rear wall stack. A retaining wall, predominantly rendered brick with ashlar coping, runs across the front and returns at each end. Each house has a gateway with rusticated square piers topped with cornice caps. Nos. 19-23 retain their original cast-iron spearhead railings. The tower was reportedly constructed to provide a view of the nearby racecourse on the Forest.
