Description
The boathouse at the southwest corner of the lake at Wollaton Hall is designed to resemble a "sham" bridge. It was constructed between 1774 and 1785 during the extension of the lake and was restored in 1985. The structure is made of brick and features a central raised stone keystone and stone impost bands. The coping has been replaced with concrete. It is covered by a turfed earth mound that conceals five graduated round brick arches facing the lake. Inside, there are five barrel vaults, with the two outer vaults being blind. The openings at the ends of the three main chambers are secured with wrought-iron grates. At the rear, there is a projecting gable above the central chamber. Changes in the water level of the lake have altered the levels around the boathouse, leading to the insertion of a concrete floor above the original water level, which has resulted in truncated piers. Render was added inside each barrel vault during the 1980s.
