Description
The four stone pedestal bases on the Upper South Terrace at Wollaton Hall garden were designed for 17th century statues around 1690. Each base is made of Hollington sandstone and features a square moulded stone base and cornice, with a plain stone shaft. These identical bases have been moved around the parterre lawn, as indicated by documentary evidence. Several statues were originally placed on the upper lawn and are depicted in late 17th century illustrations. Four of these statues still exist and are currently stored in the Camellia House. References include a photograph in Pall Mall magazine by E.M. Middleton from around 1890, an oil painting of Wollaton Hall by Jan Siberechts from around 1695, and an engraving of Wollaton Hall by Kip and Knyff from around 1707.
