GV II

Circular pond. Possibly late C16 designed by Robert Smythson for Sir Francis Willoughby, moved early or late C17. Sandstone ashlar built on brick foundations. Circular plan, with slightly raised stone edging and lining. Lead pipe attached which acted as a continuous fountain. Fountain currently not in use. This pond was first recorded in Jan Siberechts painting of Wollaton Hall and gardens painted in 1695.

Circular stone pond, with integral lead-piped fountain. c.1690. Sandstone with brick footings. Stone restraint with rounded edges, and rebate for lead pipe water supply, stone lining. Circular plan. The pond appears to have been designed with its integral lead-pipe fountain providing a continuous jet of water around the perimeter into the centre. The working fountain is illustrated in all of the historic illustrations from 1695 right through to the late C19. The pond and fountain were designed as part of the late-seventeenth century layout of the south terrace and situated in a similar location to the former sundial designed by Robert Smythson. Fountain currently not in use.
