Description
The circular pond on the upper garden terrace in front of Wollaton Hall is a Grade II listed feature, possibly designed in the late 16th century by Robert Smythson for Sir Francis Willoughby. It was relocated in the 17th century. The pond is constructed from sandstone ashlar on brick foundations and has a circular shape with slightly raised stone edging and lining. It includes an integral lead pipe that was intended to create a continuous fountain, although this fountain is currently not in use.
This pond was first documented in Jan Siberechts' painting of Wollaton Hall and its gardens from 1695. The design features rounded edges and a rebate for the lead pipe water supply, allowing water to flow around the perimeter into the center. The working fountain was depicted in various historic illustrations from 1695 to the late 19th century. The pond and fountain were part of the late 17th-century layout of the south terrace and are situated near where a former sundial, also designed by Robert Smythson, once stood.
