Description

20A Millstone Lane is an early 19th-century domestic building that has been converted into offices. It is made of red engineering brick and has a slate roof.

The building has a rectangular plan at the front and features a later extension at the rear, creating an overall L-shaped footprint. It stands two storeys tall with a classically proportioned front elevation. On the ground floor, there are two sash windows flanked by wide and round-headed carriageway arches. The left arch serves as the foyer with a replacement timber gate, while the right arch remains a carriageway entrance with its original, restored timber panelled gateway and original metalwork. The first floor has three widely spaced multi-pane sash windows, with the central window having 8 over 16 panes and the side windows having 8 over 8 panes. A projecting string course separates the ground and first floors, and there is a dentiled eaves course. A single circular structural tie plate is located towards the right, and a downpipe is situated at the centre. A brick gable stack is present on the right side.

The rear elevation features the carriageway to the left on the ground floor, accompanied by three windows to the right, one of which is smaller than the other two. The rest of the ground floor is obscured by the later extension. The first floor has regularly spaced multi-pane sash windows, all set under segmental-headed brick arches with slate cills.

Inside, the building has been adapted for office use, with renovations made to meet modern requirements. The stair remains in its original location, and the original plan form is mostly still visible. One fireplace is intact on the first floor, and other original features may be hidden beneath modern finishes, such as suspended ceilings, but these could not be confirmed during the site visit.
