Description

This is an 18th-century house with 19th-century additions, now used as offices. The building is constructed of red brick with a graded slate roof and timber-framed sash windows. The original house is nearly square, with a 19th-century addition projecting to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan.

The building is two storeys and has an attic. The south-facing front elevation is classically proportioned, with three bays. A central doorway is topped by a semi-circular fanlight and is set within a timber door case featuring an open, dentiled pediment. Flanking the doorway are windows with flat brick arches above. There is a single sash window to the left and two to the right on the ground floor. The floor above has single sash windows and hipped dormers with multi-pane windows are visible at the roofline. A base course and a slightly projecting string course run along the elevation. Windows on the ground and first floors are vertically sliding sashes set in moulded cases, while the dormers have horizontally sliding sashes.

Internally, the building has been adapted for office use, including the insertion of suspended ceilings on the ground floor. The original layout, with two rooms on the ground floor flanking a central passage leading to a rear staircase, is still clearly discernible. The first floor has two rooms accessed from a landing, and there's access to the rear wing, which contains further meeting rooms and an additional stair located at the very rear of the building. The main staircase, with an open string, carved decorative brackets, slender, tapered and turned balusters, and a ramped handrail, is characteristic of its 18th-century origins and remains in good condition. Several fireplaces from the 18th and 19th centuries are retained on both the ground and first floors. Original carpentry, including door frames, some skirting, simply panelled cupboard doors, and plain cornicing, also survive throughout. The attic, accessible from the neighbouring property at 20A Millstone Lane, retains the early timber roof structure. Other noteworthy features include a vaulted cellar, and a rear ground-floor window with timber mullions, open longer lights, and divided, simply coloured and patterned upper lights.
