Description

This is a former dwelling, dating to the 1890s, now used as a public house. The building is constructed of red engineering brick with freestone masonry dressings and a slate roof. It is nearly square on plan.

The building is two storeys with a tall attic. The front elevation has a tripartite mullioned window at ground floor with small leaded panes, featuring a shield in a larger pane in the upper central panel. Above this, at first floor, is a large oriel window supported by sweeping masonry corbelling. The main entrance is on the right-hand side of the ground floor, with a modern single-leafed door and a small-paned fan light above. A mullioned two-light window is positioned above the entrance at first floor level. A plinth of blue brick courses is visible, with red brick above and a masonry capping. Modern timber signage extends across the width of the elevation between ground and first floors. An ashlar masonry eaves course and a cornice, detailed with moulded panels and simple consoles, run along the top of the building. The roof is tall and steeply pitched. Ashlar quoins define door and window openings, and sloped sills are also of ashlar masonry. A tall brick stack on the left gable end is detailed with dentils around the top. The rear elevation faces a small court and includes a single-storey, flat-roofed conservatory extension, which is not of special interest. Modern projecting bay windows have been added to the first floor of the rear elevation. Side gable elevations feature an eaves course and are otherwise blind, mostly obscured by neighbouring buildings.

Inside, beyond the front door is an entrance lobby leading to a round-headed, timber-lined archway to the main bar area and the staircase. A deeply-recessed timber-panelled and multi-pane glass screen with art-nouveau floral and foliate decoration is also present. The central staircase has a timber balustrade with decorated newel posts and balusters in the shape of carved and incised hearts, along with turned finials and pendants. While the interior of the ground and first floors have been refurbished, the original plan form remains. The attic has been altered to create a duplex manager's flat; this space was formerly a studio and incorporates a large projecting skylight in the roof.
