Description
The Tomb of Andrew Lord Rollo, located to the northeast of St Margaret's Church in Leicester, is a Grade II* listed structure dating from 1765. It is constructed from sandstone ashlar and slate and features a large rectangular shape raised on two steps. The tomb has a moulded plinth and base, topped by a moulded band. At each corner, there are fluted Doric pilasters that support a moulded entablature, which is topped by a cornice. Each face of the tomb displays a large rectangular plaque with ornate carved pilaster panels on either side. The west front features a long inscription on the slate plaque that records the life and achievements of Andrew Lord Rollo, who died in 1765. Above this inscription is a carved coat-of-arms set within an open pediment. The other three sides each have a shallow carved relief depicting Lord Rollo's arms and military trophies. This tomb is noted as a rare and exceptionally fine example of 18th-century slate carving.
