Description
The Unitarian Chapel, also known as the Great Meeting, was built in 1707 and is one of the earliest significant brick buildings in Leicester. This two-storey chapel features a red brick and stucco exterior with four windows that have moulded stone shouldered architraves and modern glazing. It has a well-defined moulded eaves cornice and a steep-pitched hipped roof covered in slates. The ends of the elevation are accentuated by giant angle pilasters, and there is a moulded stucco band and plinth. The front includes a mid-19th century ground floor projection with a continuous entablature and a central porch supported by Tuscan columns, with one window on each side that replicates the original windows above.
Inside, the chapel boasts a fine octagonal domed plaster ceiling from 1786. The chancel was added in 1866, along with other interior alterations that replaced an early 19th century gallery on three sides with the current gallery. A mural tablet commemorates the marriage of William Rowlett in 1837, which is believed to be the first marriage in a non-conformist chapel in England. In front of the chapel, there are 19th century cast iron gates of simple design, with restored railings.
