Description

The Gate House, built between 1445 and 1459, is a picturesque building located on Castle Street. It features a ground floor made of brick and stone, while the upper floor is constructed with timber framing and close-set studding. The building has two storeys and includes a right-hand three-storey oversailing coved gable end adorned with carved bargeboards. The windows consist of six 18th-century sashes with glazing bars, some of which have been restored, along with casements that have leaded panes. There is a doorway on the right side, and on the left, the first floor oversails with a carriageway leading to Castle Yard. This carriageway has heavily moulded jambs and a lintel that is braced at angles, forming an elliptical arch with continuous moulding. The rear wing facing Castle Yard is brick-faced, and there is a small 18th-century red brick addition. The Gate House is part of a group of listed buildings that includes all the structures on Castle Street, Castle View, and Castle Yard, as well as Skeffington House, the Iron Gates, Chantry House, and Newarke Wall, all located in The Newarke.
